Building a Business That Stands for Something

Building a Business That Stands for Something

Starting a business, you often have an idea, finite resources (perhaps) and some level of skill. To bring your business idea to life, nurture it and sustain it to become a legacy, you have to find the right people, create an environment where they can thrive, and stay committed to your vision even when challenges arise.

On my nascent business journey, I’ve learned that you don’t just need employees, you need people who believe in what you’re building and commit to stay the course with you. Team dynamics can make or break a business. And sometimes, the best lessons come from real experiences.

Vikkie Oh Atelier Ltd., is 2 years and 6 months old as of this month. We are now a team of 15 people (9 are women) and here are some lessons I have learned.

→ Hire for Values, Not Just Talent

I once hired someone whose resume checked all the boxes, but they struggled with the fast-paced, collaborative nature of the team. More so, they lacked customer relations skills, which is the bedrock of our front operations. On the other hand, a less experienced candidate with a natural flair for engaging with people and a passion for storytelling turned out to be one of our strongest assets.

Skills can be taught, but alignment with your vision is invaluable.

→ Empower Women, Strengthen Communities

A young woman on my team has incredible design talent but lacks confidence because she had never been given leadership opportunities. With consistent coaching, mentorship and trust, she is blossoming into a lead designer and now mentors other young women fashion trainees.

When women are empowered, they don’t just contribute—they elevate the entire business.

→ Culture Is the Foundation, Not an Afterthought

I once had a team member leave, not because of pay or workload, but because they didn’t feel a sense of belonging. That moment reinforced a crucial lesson: a strong inclusive and positive organizational culture is what keeps people invested. It’s about fostering collaboration, respect, and shared purpose from day one.

→ Leadership Is About Lifting Others

In my 20+ years in human rights and sustainable development, I saw firsthand that leadership is not about control. Leadership is about creating opportunities for others to thrive.

The best teams don’t just follow a leader; they co-create the journey.

A business isn’t just a brand, it is a reflection of the people behind it. When you build with intention, empower with trust, and lead with purpose, the right people will find their way to you.
