Why Choose Kenya?

Why Choose Kenya?

Why Set Up a Fashion Business in Kenya and Not Nigeria?

I am Nigerian (in case anyone forgot 🙂). Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa. Nigeria is a respected leader in African fashion and Lagos state is recognized globally as a fashion capital. And when it comes to my primary fabric of production, Nigeria is the largest hub for its trade and consumption.

So, one would think a natural choice to re-establish roots and set up business after leaving the UN would be home, right?

The decision for me was not a simple one but the choice was clear. While both Kenya and Nigeria are powerhouses in their own right, Kenya offers a unique blend of opportunities that make it the ideal home for my nascent fashion business.

Here’s why Kenya stands out:

✅ Firstly, for me, the Nigerian market is already saturated with "African" fashion and fashion designers, while interest in Kenya and other East African countries is still evolving.

✅ Ease of Doing Business – Kenya consistently ranks higher in business-friendly policies, streamlined registration processes, and a more stable regulatory framework.

✅ Political & Economic Stability – While no country is without challenges, Kenya has demonstrated a relatively stable political environment. Stability is crucial for a growing business.

✅ Global Market Access – Kenya benefits from trade agreements like AGOA (African Growth and Opportunity Act) and EAC (East African Community), providing smoother entry into international markets.

✅ Creative & Cultural Hub – Nairobi is a melting pot of innovation, attracting global designers, investors, and entrepreneurs. The city fosters a vibrant creative scene with fashion incubators, expos, and a rising middle class that appreciates and supports local brands.

✅ Sustainability & Ethical Production – Kenya is at the forefront of sustainable fashion in Africa. From ethical sourcing of materials to eco-friendly manufacturing, the country offers access to skilled artisans and sustainable fabrics.

In Kenya, I have found a vibrant community that is eager to embrace new fashion trends. Here, my brand is not only thriving but also contributing to the cultural tapestry of the region.

When I started Vikkie Oh Atelier Ltd in Kenya, I wasn’t just choosing a location—I was choosing a vision, an ecosystem, and a future for African fashion. Kenya is not just a business location—it’s a home for my vision. A vision where African prints and culture find their place in global professional spaces.

Would love to hear your thoughts! If you were starting a fashion business in Africa, where would you go and why?
