I love so-called African prints so much. African print designs are not just patterns on fabric; they are visual poetry expressing history, culture, and identity in every weave and motif.

Each print carries meaning.

The Adinkra symbols of Ghana represent concepts, proverbs, and values of the Akan people passed down through generations. They’re now used extensively on fabrics, logos, artwork, and even tattoos.

The Kitenge prints of East Africa, once reserved for special occasions, are now a statement of pride and individuality. Kitenge is more than just fabric; it's a medium for storytelling, cultural expression, and conveying messages. In the coastal areas of Kenya and in Tanzania, kitenges often have Swahili sayings written on them.

The Bogolanfini (mud cloth) of Mali historically used as a form of protection and a badge of honor is becoming a popular textile used in fashion, art, and interior design, both locally and internationally.

For centuries, African prints have been a symbol of resilience, self-expression, and belonging. They tell stories of royalty, resistance, and celebration. So when I wear African prints, I don’t just see colors and patterns—I see legacy, power, and confidence.

My passion for African prints drove my ambition to start the Facebook community, “Ankara Republic”, in 2018. The group now has 31,000 members. In the same year, I decided to wear only African print based garments for work, play and everything in between. It has been 7 years since I made that decision and I am still going strong.

Culture should never be confined to history books—it should be embraced, worn, and celebrated in boardrooms, at events, and in everyday life. This passion led me to launch Vikkie Oh Atelier in 2022, a brand that brings African prints into global professional spaces.

Fashion is more than aesthetics; it’s a bridge between tradition and modernity. When you wear something deeply connected to your roots, you carry your history forward with confidence. You redefine perceptions. You inspire others to embrace their own heritage.
